Spectacular Clematis

Most nurseries and garden centers still have a good selection of bare-root plants. Among the most spectacular you could choose would be the flowering vine clematis. Many species and varieties are available, with one type or another suitable for almost any climate. The flowers on most are truly stunning. They can be small and delicate, but most are large and boisterous, and can reach up to 10 inches across. Colors vary from bright white and cream, to spectacular pastels and alluring shades of blue, violet, purple and red. Bloom season varies by type but most flower in late spring or summer. The plants are also quite variable. The popular large flowering hybrids are more restrained plants that climb 8 to 10 feet high, but many species, including Clematis montana, are very vigorous and can grow into the tops of trees over 30 feet high.

Your nursery can recommend the best type of clematis for your area. Plant where the roots are cool and shady, but where the top of the plant can reach the sun. Clematis likes rich, well- drained soil. Provide some type of support for the vine to climb on. Trellises, arbors, fences, pillars or even the branches of a tree are possibilities. Don't let plants dry out and apply a thick layer of mulch to keep the roots cool.
