Pest Alerts - Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, is a wood-boring beetle that was discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in the summer of 2002. It has now infested parts of Indiana, Ohio and Maryland. Larvae feed in the phloem and outer sapwood, producing galleries that eventually girdle and kill branches and entire trees.

State-specific Information
Michigan
A concerted effort to stop EAB in Michigan has been launched by state and federal officials. These efforts include research to understand the beetle's life cycle, information on insecticide evaluations and eradication efforts by the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
Indiana
Department of Natural Resources officials confirmed that the emerald ash borer had infected a tree in Steuben County. This is the first confirmation of the ash tree–killing pest in Indiana. The pest was discovered in April 2004 at the Yogi Bear Jellystone campground on Barton Lake in Steuben County about 40 miles north of Fort Wayne.
Ohio
Emerald Ash Borer was first identified in ash trees in Ohio in February 2003. Since then, additional satellite infestations have emerged in Hicksville in Defiance County (Aug. 2003), in Rossford in Wood County (Sept. 2003), in Columbus (Nov. 2003), in Lucas County near the Toledo Express Airport (March 2004), again near Whitehouse (May 2004), in Fulton County near Swanton in the Maumee State Forest (May 24, 2004) and near N Baltimore in Wood County.
Maryland
On Thursday, August 28, 2003, a Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) inspector found emerald ash borer–infested ash trees at a single Prince George's County nursery. The Maryland Department of Agriculture issued a Quarantine Order on March 17, 2004.
Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is preparing for the imminent arrival of the emerald ash borer, one of the latest exotic forest pests to come to the Great Lakes region. We conducted surveys during the summer of 2004 (June - September). The focus of the surveys (1) to collect baseline data on the current health status of the ash resource in Wisconsin and (2) to detect emerald ash borer infestations in Wisconsin.
Bayer Advanced™ Solutions
Homeowners can protect their trees from EAB attack by using Bayer Advanced™ Tree & Shrub Insect Control Concentrate. It's easy to use, just mix in a bucket or sprinkling can and pour around the base of the tree (read the label and follow the directions). It also kills other harmful pests such as aphids, sawfly larvae, whiteflies, adelgids and many more. One application provides 12-month insect protection. See the MSU publication for recommended timing of the application.
Another way to protect ash trees from attack by adult EAB's is to spray trees when the adult beetles are active by using Bayer Advanced™ PowerForce® Multi-Insect Killer Ready-To-Spray (also available in Bayer Advanced™ PowerForce® Multi-Insect Killer Concentrate). Read and follow label directions when spraying trees.
