Preventing Insect Pests from Marching Indoors

As the weather cools in fall, outdoor insects like ants, roaches, spiders and other insects begin their trek inside. Here are some things you can do to reduce indoor pests problems this fall, winter and even next spring.

First, use Bayer Advanced™ Home Pest Control Indoor/Outdoor Insect Killer Ready-To-Spray. Home Pest Control can keep insects at bay for up to nine months and is available with battery-operated (batteries included) sprayer for easy use. Here’s how to get the best results:

Spray the entire outside perimeter of your home. Spray a band about 3 to 4 feet wide (for serious infestations increase the band up to 10 feet wide) that extends at least 12 inches up the side of the building. Make sure to get around patios and porches, and pay special attention to cracks, crevices, entries to the home or anywhere two dissimilar building materials meet. If pests are present, spray garages, driveways and walkways.

Indoors, spray around baseboards, cracks and crevices and other places where insects live and hide, such as under sinks, cabinets, refrigerators and damp areas.

Let the spray dry undisturbed.

Follow the instructions on the label, making sure not to spray surfaces where food is prepared. Keep kids and pets out of the sprayed area until the spray has dried.

Here are some additional steps that will help keep pests to a minimum.

Keep indoors clean. Clean up often, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. Wipe down counters and sweep floors regularly. Also keep cupboards and storage areas clean. Even the smallest of crumbs or tiniest spill can be a full meal for ants and roaches.

Store pet foods in sealed containers. Many insects, especially ants, love pet foods as much as people food. Clean up after pets have eaten. Store foods in sealed containers.

Seal food tightly. Make sure insects can’t get in packages of cereal, sugar, cookies and other loose food materials in cupboards and storage areas. If necessary, store items in sealed containers.

Seal entry points. Follow a trail of ants to where they are entering the house. Seal the area with caulking.

Move firewood and piles of debris away from the house. They can encourage pest build-ups near the house.

In addition to pests that want to come inside, there are also nuisance pests like mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and ants that may still infest your yard and gardens, especially in southern climates. Often these insects reach levels that can take away from your enjoying the outdoors, and some may eventually end up inside. To control these pests and many other common garden pests, use Bayer Advanced™ Complete Insect Killer For Soil & Turf Ready-To-Spray.
