This Year's Great New Roses
Our November Web page feature story introduced you to this year's All-America Rose Selections: 'Hot Cocoa,' 'Whisper,' 'Eureka' and 'Cherry Parfait.' As we've scoured the rose catalogs, several other roses have caught our attention:
'Carefree Marvel' is a very free-blooming ground-cover rose with deep-pink blooms among glossy, green, disease-resistant foliage. Excellent for mass plantings or for edging borders.
'Distant Drums.' A very unusual color for a shrub rose, this hardy variety from Griffith Buck has ruffled, orchid-pink blooms that have a tannish tone in the bud. A very tough, vigorous rose with dark-green foliage and moderate fragrance.
'Grand Prize.' The first American-bred rose in over 30 years to win the coveted Golden Rose of the Hague trophy in Europe. It produces masses of clusters of creamy-apricot blooms tinged with red. Flowers have a light, spicy fragrance. Great plant to use in the landscape or mix with flowering perennials.
'Greetings' is a hardy shrub that has won a number of awards in Europe. The flowers are an unusual, eye-catching white edged with purplish pink. They have a light, sweet fragrance. Adds pizzazz to flower borders.
'Heart 'n' Soul,' another shrub rose, bears ruffled white flowers that are banded with bright red. They have a light apple scent. An excellent landscape rose with a large, mounded habit and disease-resistant foliage.
'Key Largo' is a hybrid tea with large, bright-coral blooms lightly scented with citrus. The flowers can reach up to 6 inches across and are stunning in bouquets.
'Pretty Lady' is a creamy-white floribunda with exceptional resistance to blackspot. Very free blooming and clean foliaged. Great in the landscape.
'Radiant Perfume' is advertised as the most fragrant yellow hybrid tea ever, with over-powering lemony scent. The long-stemmed blooms are beautiful in bouquets and will fill an entire room with wonderful citrus aroma.
