Soil Prep in the Vegetable Garden
Proper soil preparation prior to planting is important in any kind of gardening but is particularly critical when growing vegetables. Vegetables must get off to a fast start and continue to grow vigorously to ensure a long and productive season. Insufficient nutrients, poor soil or inadequate water will result in stagnation and low-quality harvests.
So after the soil thaws in cold winter areas, or as it begins to dry in mild-winter areas, take time to properly prepare your vegetable garden soil.
Start with a soil test (your cooperative extension office can provide information) to see if you need to adjust soil pH or compensate for specific nutrient deficiencies. Spread two to three inches of organic matter, such as compost or ground bark, over the planting area. Next apply Bayer Advanced™ Triple Action All Purpose Plant Food Granules according to the label instructions. One application will feed for up to three months.
Using a spade or roto-tiller, cultivate the soil to a depth of six to eight inches. You'll get the best results if the soil is just lightly moist, not too wet or too dry. Rake the bed smooth and you're ready to plant.
