Summer's Cut Flowers

What would summer be without big, beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers decorating every room in the house? Few things can bring color, life and drama indoors. But what if spring was a little busier than usual, planting got put off, and your garden just isn't offering up the cut flower possibilities? What can you plant now to make sure both indoors and outdoors and bright and colorful the rest of the summer? Here are three fast-growing flowers that are also good in bouquets.

'State Fair' zinnias are tall, long-stemmed flowers that come almost every color but blue and green. They're easy to start from seed or transplant, just make sure you plant in full sun.

Dahlias come in an even wider range of single and multi-colors as well as dazzling flower forms like cactus, pom-pom and peony. You'll get the biggest choice of varieties, colors and flower form if you start from tuberous roots, but many nurseries and garden centers also sell transplants. Select taller varieties and plant in full sun and rich, well-drained soil.

Sunflowers also make stunning cut flowers. They grow easily and quickly from seed, and nurseries carry a great selection of flower colors other than just yellow. Plant in full sun.
