Tulips for Mild-winter Climates

Most types of tulips need a distinct winter chill to naturalize in your garden. Consequently, gardeners living in mild-winter climates need to either dig up their tulips and store them in the refrigerator, or more likely, replant new bulbs each year. There are, however, several species of tulips that don't need chilling and will naturalize and rebloom year after year in warm-winter areas. They include: Tulipa bakeri, which bears purple flowers with a yellow base; lady tulip (T. clusiana) with either white and red, or white and yellow blooms; T. saxatilis with fragrant lilac and yellow flowers; and yellow-blooming T. sylvestris.

Look for species tulips in nurseries and garden centers or order from specialty bulb catalogs. Plant the bulbs three times as deep as they are wide in full sun and well-drained soil.
