Few vegetables are as beautiful as Swiss chard. The dark green crinkled leaves with either bright white or red stems look at home in flower borders just as much as they do in vegetable gardens. Look for the variety ‘Bright Lights’, a mix of plants with white, yellow, red, pink and even purple stems.

And you couldn’t ask for a more delicious or nutritious vegetable. High in vitamins, the leaves are wonderful steamed with a touch of lemon juice and butter.

Swiss chard is also easy to grow. Start from seeds or transplants. In cold winter climates, start seeds indoors for transplanting outside later. Plant in full sun and rich, well drained soil, and you’ll enjoy fresh chard and a more beautiful garden until summer.
