The Do-It-Yourself Way To Protect Your Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer

Research Triangle Park, N.C. — It’s amazing how one insect, smaller than a penny, can cause cities, property owners, nursery operators and the forest industry millions of dollars. But that’s exactly what the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has done as it moves across the United States.

According to www.EmeraldAshBorer.info, the pest killed tens of millions of ash trees in southeastern Michigan alone, with tens of millions more lost in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. In many of these states and surrounding areas, quarantines and fines have been instituted to prevent potentially infested ash trees or firewood from moving out of areas where EAB has been discovered. Many cities are also chopping down ash trees.

The Emerald Ash Borer begins emerging in mid to late May, with peak emergence in late June. Females start laying eggs shortly after emergence.

The larvae bore through the ash tree and feed just inside the bark, leaving tracks in the process. The insect disrupts the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients, so small trees can die within one to two years of becoming infested. Large trees can be killed in three to four years.

“You can actually prevent EAB from infesting your ash trees,” said Lance Walheim, Bayer Advanced™ Garden Expert and author of Landscaping for Dummies. “There’s no need to cut them down if you do some planning.”

Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree & Shrub Protect & Feed concentrate (which contains Merit® insecticide), is an easy way for homeowners to protect ash trees from EAB. This dual-action formula kills insects and prevents new infestations for 12 months and provides a slow-release fertilizer to help your trees stay healthy. For best results, the time to apply is now.

This systemic formula protects the tree from the inside out. To apply, measure the distance around the tree trunk to determine the amount of product to use. Pour it into a bucket or watering can, fill it with water and empty the bucket around the base of the tree. The roots of the tree absorb the Imidacloprid. It travels through the trunk and out to the limbs to protect every inch of the tree from damaging insects. Be sure to read and follow all label directions to ensure proper application.
