Your Personal Lawn Wellness Program to Prevent Weeds

Research Triangle Park, N.C. – The American Society of Landscape Architects says an attractive and functional landscape can increase property values from 5 percent to 20 percent. But the time and money you spend creating a well-designed landscape can be wasted if you have weeds in your lawn.

Weeds are ugly, embarrassing and harm the value of your home. They spread across your lawn and over to your neighbor’s yard, which doesn’t exactly help your reputation at the next neighborhood meeting.

“Weeds can cause serious damage to your lawn if they’re not controlled,” says Lance Walheim, Bayer Advanced™ Garden Expert and co-author of Lawn Care for Dummies. “Clover, Dandelion, Henbit, Plantain, Knotweed, Spotted Spurge and other broadleaf weeds are some of the most troublesome for homeowners.”

If you search the Internet, you’ll find a wide variety of weed-control products, including some that literally torch weeds with fire. But it’s easier and cheaper to prevent weeds, instead of letting them get out of hand.

Weed Prevention Tips:

  • Fertilize: Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda and St. Augustine, require fertilizer beginning in late spring. Cool-season grasses, such as tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass, require fertilizer in spring or fall.
  • Deep watering is best: Your lawn requires a good soaking of water to a depth of 6-8 inches. You can use a screwdriver to probe the soil to determine if the water is reaching the recommended depth.
  • Mow your grass weekly: Regular mowing makes your lawn healthier and easier to cut. Set the mower at the recommended height for your grass type. Keep the mower blade sharp for a clean cut and to reduce lawn disease.
  • Use brand-new Bayer Advanced Season Long Weed Control for Lawns: Of course, there are plenty of weed-control products available in your garden center. But Bayer Advanced Season Long Weed Control for Lawns is a revolutionary new weed control solution available only from Bayer Advanced. It contains a proven blend of three weed killers to kill many existing weeds PLUS a residual herbicide to keep many weeds from coming back for up to 6 months. Traditional lawn weed killers require multiple applications, which is frustrating, time consuming and costly for homeowners. For best results, apply in the spring and fall for year-round protection.
