Risky Insects

Raleigh, N.C. - Most people know scorpions, fire ants, spiders and ticks can be dangerous: That's why we try to avoid them outdoors. But these insects can also get inside your home through cracks and crevices. It can be painful if they bite or sting you, and can even send you to the hospital.

  • The American Association of Poison Control Centers reports more than 14,500 consultations for scorpion stings in 2005. Most stings occur on the hands and can cause pain, swelling, and numbness or tingling on the skin. Sometimes, more serious symptoms like abnormal twitching, restlessness and difficulty breathing show up, most often in children.
  • According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, stings from bees, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets and fire ants are the cause of about 500,000 allergy-related emergency room visits each year and at least 40 U.S. deaths from anaphylaxis.
  • Spiders rarely kill people, but a bite from a black widow, hobo spider or a brown recluse can make you pretty sick. A reaction from one of their bites can include blistering, nausea, vomiting and painful muscle cramps.
  • Most common in the spring and summer months, ticks can be found everywhere in the U.S. When they bite, ticks can transmit many different illnesses like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tick paralysis. Tick bites can also trigger secondary infections and allergic reactions.

Prevention is the best protection against these pests. Don't stack wood around your house. Caulk all cracks and crevices inside, especially around windows and doors and in the basement. Recycle promptly. Don't let old newspapers, cardboard, soda cans and other items accumulate. If you have pets, bathe them often and don't forget to vacuum carpets and furniture.

"Even the best-kept yard and cleanest house can be appealing to pests," says Bayer Advanced entomologist, Ken Kukorowski, Ph.D. "But there's a simple, do-it-yourself way to keep them under control."
