July What To Do Now Calendar
Care for houseplants – Clean foliage, water regularly and fertilize. Repot as necessary. For more information on caring for houseplants, go to the Bayer Advanced houseplant page. To feed and protect from insects, use Bayer Advanced™ 2-in-1 Insect Control plus Fertilizer Plant Spikes – no spraying, no mess. Just push the spikes into the soil for up to eight weeks of nutrition and protection. To control existing insect pests, use Bayer Advanced™ Dual Action Rose & Flower Insect Killer Ready-To-Use.
Care for roses – Remove faded flowers, cutting back to the first leaf with five leaflets. Roses, such as floribundas and shrubs, which bloom in clusters, can be lightly sheared after blooms fade. Feed and protect from insects and disease with Bayer Advanced™ All-In-One Rose & Flower Care Concentrate. If you have spider mites, use Bayer Advanced™ 2-in-1 Systemic Rose & Flower Care Granules. This systemic product controls numerous insect pests and mites while feeding your roses. To control mites and diseases, such as black spot and powdery mildew, use Bayer Advanced™ 3-in-1 Insect, Disease & Mite Control Ready-To-Use. If rose diseases are your problem, use Bayer Advanced™ Disease Control for Roses, Flowers & Shrubs Concentrate.
Check landscape trees – Examine lower trunks for chewing damage from mice and other rodents. If necessary, protect with plastic trunk guards available at nurseries and garden centers and loosen tight ties and/or remove stakes on young trees.
Control and prevent lawn diseases – Use Bayer Advanced™ Fungus Control for Lawns Granules to control and prevent lawn diseases such as brown patch and red thread.
Control garden weeds – Garden weeds are easiest to control when young. Use an appropriate herbicide, hoe or pull by hand. (Be sure to take care in applying herbicides to prevent spray drift from damaging desirable plants.) Also, remember the old adage, “leaves of three, let it be,” referring to avoiding poison oak. Instead substitute “leaves of three, spray with Bayer Advanced™ Brush Killer Plus Concentrate.”
Control indoor pests – To control insects such as spiders, fleas and ants, use Bayer Advanced™ Home Pest Control Indoor & Outdoor Insect Killer Ready-To-Spray, which provides up to 12 months of indoor insect protection. For easier-than-ever control of roaches, use the Bayer Advanced™ Dual Action Roach Killer Power Pen® Ready-To-Use. For more information, visit the Bayer Advanced Indoor Pest Control Web page.
Control lawn pests – Apply Bayer Advanced™ Season-Long Grub Control Granules (product discontinued) to control white grubs. This is the absolute best time of the year to apply preventive grub-control measures. The grubs that will do damage to your lawn this summer are now hatching into small larvae. Control them now before they damage your lawn. Use Bayer Advanced™ Complete Insect Killer For Soil & Turf Concentrate to control destructive pests aboveground at the same time you control soil insects. If just surface insects or nuisance pests are the problem, apply Bayer Advanced™ PowerForce® Multi-Insect Killer Granules.
Control lawn weeds – Control weeds with Bayer Advanced™ All-In-One Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer Ready-To-Spray (not for use on St. Augustine grass, Bahia grass, bentgrass, carpetgrass, centipede grass or Dichondra). It kills over 200 broadleaf and grassy weeds. Follow label directions carefully.
Control slugs and snails – Protect flowers, vegetables and other tender plants with Bayer Advanced™ Dual Action Snail & Slug Killer Bait Granules.
Fertilize – Keep landscape plants healthy and vigorous, and flowers blooming on and on, with a quality fertilizer.
Mow – Cool-season lawns are growing vigorously. Mow weekly. Set your mower height at the upper end of the mowing range to help develop deeper roots and heat tolerance. Be sure to sharpen the blades and tune up the lawn mower for peak efficiency.
Plant flowers – Continue planting summer bulbs such as gladiolus, calla lilies and dahlias, as well as annuals such as zinnias, cosmos and marigolds. Protect from insect pests with Bayer Advanced™ Dual Action Rose & Flower Insect Killer Ready-To-Use. It kills insect pests on contact and keeps killing by systemic action for a month. One thorough spray saves you time and money.
Plant trees and shrubs – Plant new trees and shrubs, including roses. Protect new plantings from insects with Bayer Advanced™ 3 in 1 Tree & Shrub Plant Starter Ready-To-Use Throw Pack. The exclusive formula provides up to 3 months of feeding, moisture control and insect protection. Or you can use Bayer Advanced™ 12-Month Tree & Shrub Protect & Feed Granules. One application protects for up to 12 months.
Plant vegetables and herbs – Mid-month, plant cool-season vegetables, such as lettuce, broccoli and cabbage, from seed. Inland there’s still time to plant warm-season crops like tomatoes, squash and corn. Also plant mint, basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary and thyme. Water regularly until plants are established. Protect vegetables listed on the label from insect pests with Bayer Advanced™ PowerForce® Multi-Insect Killer Concentrate, Bayer Advanced™ Complete Insect Dust For Gardens Ready-To-Use or Bayer Advanced™ Complete Insect Killer for Gardens Ready-To-Use.
Water gardens – Continue to monitor irrigation systems. Fix clogs and broken sprinklers. Adjust spray heads. Apply a fresh layer of organic mulch to conserve moisture.
Water lawns – Make sure sprinklers are operating properly. Follow local watering guidelines available from water department or cooperative extension office.
