Landscape –It’s prime planting season for everything from flowering trees and shrubs to ground covers and roses. Plant cool season lawns –This is a good time to plant Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, rye and bentgrass lawns from seed or sod.

Plant flowers –There's much to plant, including cool-season annuals like pansies, calendulas and violas, and perennials, such as candytuft and geraniums. Also plant summer bulbs like gladiolus, calla and dahlias. Later in the month, start summer annuals like zinnias and marigolds from seed or transplants. Plant vegetables and herbs –Plant cool-season vegetables, such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, carrots and beets. Where frosts are no longer a threat (otherwise protect plants with row covers), plant the first warm-season crops like tomatoes, squash and corn. Also plant mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary and thyme. Prune –Finish pruning deciduous trees, shrubs, vines and other landscape plants.

Sow seeds –Start summer annuals and vegetables indoors for transplanting outside later.

Water –Winter sun can dry out pots. Water as needed. In the rest of the garden, water less in cool weather, but don’t let new transplants, vegetables or annuals dry out. When possible, turn off automatic sprinkler systems watering established plants. Deep-water trees and shrubs during extended dry spells.
